The great transformation: From government-owned to foreign-controlled banking sectors A symposium on banking in transition

Over the past two decades, unprecedented changes in banking systems have occurred around the world. An important aspect of this global phenomenon is the great transformation of banking systems from ones dominated by government ownership to ones controlled mainly by foreign financial institutions, primarily in the transition economies but also in other emerging market economies. Accompanying this process has been a swift improvement in the financial and institutional environments and an increasing homogenization of banking sectors across the European transition countries in particular.
