A mark carved into discarded stone

It is not the first time that Giorgio Bonaguro experiments a delicate and precious material like stone. It happened with Planetario, in 2018, a limited edition of 9 pitchers made by Ars Fabricandi/Bensimon Gallery The series was composed of onyx or marble "planets" supported by Bohemia glass, playing with the contrast between the shimmering streaks and bold colours of the stones and the transparency of the glass. The following year, for the Joaquim tables, made by Tacchini and a tribute to the modern-tropicalist forms of Joaquim Tenreiro, the industrial designer from Modena, the focus is marble: the goal is different - to salvage discards, of different size and thickness. The design and formal solution is enclosed in the slender metal structure. The latest design, Segno, made this year for Mortosi, seems to join both experiences: the marble is paired with borosilicate glass (like the Planetario series), but is also made from discards (as in Joaquim). "Small portions of glass of varying thickness, which otherwise would remain unused, become an elegant base for small objects," explains the designer. The marble elements stand out for their precise marks, carved or engraved onto the stone, which mark where to insert the glass object - be it a vase for flowers or plants, a fruit bowl, a change tray.
