Dr. Amanda Newton recommends an article by BrianThoma and colleagues published in 2019 that presents anexamination of suicidality disparities among transgenderand cisgender adolescents. What I found particularly informativewas the presentation of risk among different genderidentities—compared to cisgender males, the odds oflifetime suicidal ideation were 5 to 6 times higher amongtransgender males and transgender females and 3 timeshigher for adolescents questioning their gender. The oddsof lifetime suicide attempts requiring medical care werealso higher for transgender males (12 times higher than cisgender males), non-binary adolescents and those currentlyquestioning their gender (7 to 10 times higher than cis gendermales). This article provided a good reminder of genderfluidity as gender identity may change over time for someadolescents. At the end of my read, I was left wonderingwhether our current prevention and intervention strategiesaccount for the gender spectrum and use inclusive language.
