Topical corticosteroid abuse among pediatric population – a prospective study

Topical corticosteroids (TCs) are one of the mostcommonly used preparations in dermatology practice.Their rapid anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive andanti-pruritic activity has made them the drug of choicefor a large number of dermatoses [1]. Apart from thewell documented uses of TCs, they can also cause awide array of adverse effects if used indiscriminatelyor for long duration without supervision which includesteroid rosacea, acneiform eruption, hypertrichosis [2].TCs misuse is a common problem in our country owingto their easy availability as over the counter medicationand preparations and lack of awareness among thegeneral population. TCs are commonly being usedas fairness and anti acne medications by the generalpopulation without any dermatological consultationwhich has led to a significant number of patientspresenting with cutaneous adverse effects of TCs tothe dermatologists [2,3]. Corticosteroid abuse is alsobeing observed in pediatric population where topicalsteroids are being misused by the caregivers either asself-medication or by using them for duration morethat that advised by a dermatologist.
