The purpose of this exercise is for the student to become familiar with the concept of service-learning or communityengagement and to participate in an actual community-service/engagement activity that involves some aspect ofmicrobiology (even if it’s public health or environmentally related). Note that “shadowing” and “service-learning”are not the same thing. Shadowing might involve only passively observing someone, whereas service-learninginvolves actually doing something as a volunteer that benefits the community (and you’re not paid to do it). Note. Itis possible to both shadow someone and do service (for example, if you are actually assisting the person you’reshadowing). That would be okay. The point is that you are volunteering your time.All students are to be aware of health regulations if volunteering at particular medical facilities. A written proposalis required and approved by the instructor before conducting your assignment. Proposals can be handed in oremailed.
