Guest editors' introduction to the Proceedings of the 9 th International Symposium on Biomedical Research and Applications

In these supplements to BMC Bioinformatics and BMCGenomics, we include a selection of research originallypresented at the 9th annual International Symposium onBioinformatics Research Applications (ISBRA 2013).ISBRA 2013 was held at the University of North Carolinaat Charlotte (Charlotte, NC, USA) on May 20-22, 2013.For 9 years, the ISBRA symposium has been a forum forexchange of diverse ideas and research results broadlyorganized under the umbrella disciplines of bioinformaticsand computational biology. The five keynote addresses atISBRA 2013 included talks on RNA structure (Dr. SteveHarvey), computational behavioral ecology (Dr. TanyaBerger-Wolf), peptide identification from mass spectrometry(Dr. Bin Ma), gene regulation (Dr. Martha Bulyk), andbiological network analysis (Dr. Luonan Chen). Theresearch presented by conference participants was equallydiverse. Reflecting current trends in the field, a substantialnumber of presentations were focused on genomicsresearch, so we have chosen to present two linked supplementsin BMC Bioinformatics, and one in BMC Genomics.
