Littleisknownaboutthegeneticpathwaysandtranscriptionfactorsthatcontroldevelopmentandmaturationofcentralauditoryneurons.emEn1/em,ageneexpressedbyasubsetofdevelopingandmaturesuperiorolivarycomplex(SOC)cells,encodesahomeodomaintranscriptionfactorimportantforneuronaldevelopmentinthemidbrain,cerebellum,hindbrainandspinalcord.Usinggeneticfate-mappingtechniques,weshowthatallemEn1/em-linealcellsintheSOCareneuronsandthattheseneuronsareglycinergic,cholinergicandGABAergicinneurotransmitterphenotype.emEn1/emdeletiondoesnotinterferewithspecificationorneuralfateofthesecells,butdoescauseaberrantpositioningandsubsequentdeathofallemEn1/em-linealSOCneuronsbyearlypostnatalages.emEn1/em-nullcellsalsofailtoexpressthetranscriptionfactoremFoxP1/em,suggestingthatemFoxP1/emliesdownstreamofemEn1/em.OurdatadefineimportantrolesforemEn1/eminthedevelopmentandmaturationofadiversegroupofbrainstemauditoryneurons./p/div
