Cellsinthedorsalmarginalzoneoftheamphibianembryoacquirethepotentialformesodermformationduringthefirstfewhoursfollowingfertilization.Anexaminationofthoseearlycellinteractionsmaythereforeprovideinsightonthemechanismsimportantfororganizationofaxialstructures.Theformationofmesoderm(notochord,somites,andpronephros)wasstudiedbycombiningblastomeresfromtheanimalpoleregionofXenopusembryos(32-to512-cellstages)withblastomeresfromdifferentregionsofthevegetalhemisphere.Thefrequencyofnotochordandsomitedevelopmentwassimilarincombinationsmadewithdorsalorventralblastomeres,orwithboth.Ourresultsshowthatduringearlycleavagestagestheventralhalfofthevegetalhemispherehasthepotentialtoorganizeaxialstructures,apropertypreviouslybelievedtobelimitedtothedorsalregion.
