DuringgastrulationinXenopuslaevis,thedorsallipoftheblastoporenormallyappearsbeforetheventrallip.Metabolicgradientmodelsproposethatthedorsallipdevelopsfromtheregionofhighestmetabolicactivityandsomehowdominatesotherregionstopreventthemfrombecomingdorsal.Totesttheseideas,Iappliedatemperaturegradientof12?°Cacrosstheembryo.Localizedheatingoftheprospectiveventralvegetalregionfromearlyinthefirstcleavageperioduntilgastrulationcausestheblastoporeliptoformfirstby2hrattheprospectiveventralmeridianratherthanattheprospectivedorsalmeridian.Despitethisreversalofthetimingofblastoporeformation,gastrulationiscompleted,andtheneuralplateformsatitsusualpositionontheprospectivedorsalmeridian.Thisdemonstratesthattheearliestgastrulatingregionsoftheblastoporedonotnecessarilybecomedorsal,nordotheyinhibitdorsaldevelopmentbyotherregions.Itisunlikelythataxispolarityisbasedonregionaldifferencesinenergymetabolism.
