Theeffectsofchronicnervegrowthfactoradministrationonthedevelopmentofneuropeptidesintheembryonicchickperipheralnervoussystemwerequantitatedbyradioimmunoassays.StartingatembryonicDay3.5,dailydosesof20??gofnervegrowthfactor(NGF)increasedthesubstancePcontentoflumbosacralspinalsensorygangliaatallagesstudied(Days10a€“14),whilehavingnoeffectonsubstancePlevelsofthoracicsensoryganglia.Incontrast,thecontentsofsomatostatinwereincreasedinboththoracicandlumbosacralganglia,butonlyatcomparativelylatetimepoints(Day14).Nervegrowthfactoradministrationwasalsofoundtodecreasethesomatostatincontentsoflumbosacralparavertebralsympatheticgangliaatearlytimepoints(Day8)whileincreasinglevelsatlaterstages(Day14),thusactingtoacceleratethenormallyoccurringdevelopmentalchangesinlevelofthispeptide.ThesechangeswereshowntobespecificforsomatostatinbydemonstratingthatNGFincreasedtyrosinehydroxylaselevelsinsympatheticneuronsatDay8,andhadnoeffectonsympatheticvasoactiveintestinalpolypeptidelevelsatDay14.IthasbeenconcludedthatexogenousNGFdoesnotsimplyacttoincreaseorprolongtheexpressionofneuron-specificphenotypesinthechick,butratheritsactionistimeandlocationdependenttoacceleratedevelopment.
