Inprimaryculturesofdissociatedchicksympatheticanddorsalrootgangliaadesmethylimipramine-sensitivenorepinephrine(NE)uptakeandreceptorsfornervegrowthfactor(NGF)weredemonstratedoncellswithnonneuronalmorphologybyautoradiographictechniques.Thesecellswereidentifiedasglialcellsortheirprecursorsbyamonoclonalantibodyagainstthe04surfaceantigenusingbothindirectimmunofluorescenceandcomplement-mediatedcytotoxicity.Between70and80%ofthenon-neuronalcellpopulationpresentincultureddorsalrootgangliaorsympatheticgangliaexpressedthe04antigenthroughouttheperiodofdevelopmentexaminedbetweenembryonicDays7and16.Theproportionof04-positivecellswhichexpressNGFreceptorsorNEuptakedecreasedwithincreasingageoftheganglia.Weconcludethat04-positiveimmatureglialcellswithNEuptakeandNGFreceptorsarepresentnotonlyinparasympatheticbutalsoinsympatheticandsensorygangliaofthechickembryo.
