Inordertostudyendocrineinfluenceuponcholinesteraseactivityduringregeneration,adultnewtswerehypophysectomizedeitherpriortolimbtransectionorduringregeneration.Homogenatesoflimbtissueswereassayedforcholinesteraseactivityduringeachstageofregeneration.Inanimalswithpituitariesintact,cholinesteraseactivityinregeneratinglimbtissuesdecreasessoonafteramputation,andthenitrisestothelevelofactivityinintactlimbsofnormalanimals,duringtheperiodofdifferentiation.Inhypophysectomizednewtsthereseemstobenoalterationofthisbasicpatternofactivity,butremovalofthepituitarydoesresultinmoreelevatedlevelsofenzymaticactivity.Intheintactforelimbsofcontrolnewtsundergoingregeneration,cholinesteraseactivitygreatlyincreasesastheothertransectedlimbbeginstoregeneratebutitreturnstonormalasregenerationprogresses.Iftheseanimalsarehypophysectomized,nosuchincreaseisobservedduringtheearlystagesofregeneration.Rather,thereisaninitialdecreaseincholinesteraseactivitythatisfollowedbyanincreaseinsuchactivity.Thesedataarecompatiblewiththehypothesisthatthepituitarymodulatescholinesteraseactivityinthelimbtissuesofadultnewts.
