Etymologia: Serratia marcescens

Serratia marcescens, which can cause nosocomial outbreaksand urinary tract and wound infections, is abundant in dampenvironments. It can be easily found in bathrooms, includingshower corners and basins, where it appears as a pink–orange–reddiscoloration, due to the pigment known as prodigiosin. Serratiawas discovered in Italy in 1819 when it affected polenta in a smalltown near Padua.
