Prevalence and Characteristics of Shiga Toxin- Producing E. coli (Stec) Serotypes Isolated from Subjects with and Without Diarrhea

Objectives: Infectious diarrheal diseases are responsible for considerable morbidity and mortality, especially in the developing countries. Infections with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) are an important public health problem. The development of new molecular diagnostic methods has made it possible to re-evaluate the prevalence of different STEC serotypes in diarrhea. In this study, the prevalence of STEC serotypes was investigated by PCR assay among diarrheal and healthy cases in Iran.
