Avian Influenza H5N1 Outbreaks in Village Poultry of West Java, Indonesia: A Detailed Investigation Using Participatory Epidemiology

Avian influenza A H5N1 is now considered enzootic in poultry throughout much of Indonesia and has been detrimental to the health and livelihoods of villagers who depend on backyard poultry as a source of income. In June 2006, interviews were conducted to characterize outbreaks in two villages, Cinunuk and Wangunsari, located outside the city of Bandung in West Java. Interviews were semi-structured and incorporated the techniques of participatory epidemiology. Key informants included members of households affected by the disease, political and non-political village leaders, and poultry traders.
