Usability evaluation of low-cost virtual reality hand and armrehabilitation games

The emergence of lowercost motion trackingdevices enables homebased virtual reality rehabilitation activitiesand increased accessibility to patients. Currently, littledocumentation on patients’ expectations for virtual realityrehabilitation is available. This study surveyed 10 people withstroke for their expectations of virtual reality rehabilitationgames. This study also evaluated the usability of three lowercostvirtual reality rehabilitation games using a survey andHouse of Quality analysis. The games (kitchen, archery, andpuzzle) were developed in the laboratory to encourage coordinatedfinger and arm movements. Lowercost motion trackingdevices, the P5 Glove and Microsoft Kinect, were used torecord the movements. People with stroke were found to desiremotivating and easytouse games with clinical insights andencouragement from therapists. The House of Quality analysisrevealed that the games should be improved by obtaining evidencefor clinical effectiveness, including clinical feedbackregarding improving functional abilities, adapting the games tothe user’s changing functional ability, and improving usabilityof the motiontracking devices. This study reports the expectationsof people with stroke for rehabilitation games and usabilityanalysis that can help guide development of future games.
