Comparative Evaluation of Dexmedetomedine versus Clonidine as an Adjuvant in Supraclavicular Brachial Plexus Block.

Background: Supraclavicular block is considered to bethe ideal block for upper extremity surgeries as itprovides ideal operative conditions by complete musclerelaxation and stable intra operative hemodynamics.Aim and Objectives: The aim of the study was toevaluate the efficacy and safety of Clonidine andDexmedetomedine as an adjuvant to Ropivacaine insupraclavicular brachial plexus block. Material andMethods: Ninety patients were divided randomly into 3groups of 30 each. Group CL: Patients receivedinjection Ropivacaine 0.5% (30 ml) + normal saline (1ml), Group CD: Patients received injection Ropivacaine0.5% (30 ml) + injection Clonidine (150 μg), GroupDX: Patients received injection Ropivacaine 0.5% (30ml) + injection Dexmedetomidine (100 μg). Onset ofsensory and motor block, duration of analgesia andmotor block, complications and side effects of the studydrugs were compared among the three groups. Results:The onset of sensory and motor block was earliest inGroup DX, followed by Group CD, followed by GroupCL. Complete sensory and motor block were earliest inGroup DX, followed by Group CD, followed by GroupCL. Similarly duration of sensory and motor block wasmaximum in Group DX, followed by Group CD,followed by Group CL (p0.05). Conclusion:Dexmedetomedine and Clonidine when added toRopivacaine for supraclavicular brachial plexus blockprolong the duration of analgesia. But Dexmedetomedineis a better adjuvant as compared to Clonidine.
