Whataretheimplicationsofthetransitiontoelectronicperiodicalsonnon-subscriptionlibraryexpenditures,suchasthoserequiredtoselect,accession,catalog,andprovideongoingaccessandservices?NewdataonstaffactivitiesandcostswerecollectedfromelevenUSacademiclibraries,andalife-cycleanalysiswasutilizedtostudythelonger-termcostimplicationsofthetransition.Wefindthat,onaper-titlebasis,thenon-subscriptioncostsoftheelectronicformatareconsistentlyandsubstantiallylowerthanthoseoftheprintformat.Weconcludebyconsideringtheimplicationsofthetransitiontoelectronicformats#151;andtheconsequentfavorablecostdifferentials#151;onlong-termpreservation.
