The German orientalist and Old Testament scholar Johann David Michaelis (1717–1791) succeeded in his efforts to abolish parts of the Mosaic laws as a source of law in the Scandinavian kingdoms. In order to replace laws from the Canonic law, which was no longer a source of law in the kingdoms after the Reformation, parts of the Bible were regarded as a source of law . In his seminal work on the Mosaic laws, Michaelis argued that Moses was a great lawmaker in his own time. In a different climate and historical context, however, the laws of Moses were, as a general rule, not applicable.
