In order to analyze the sustainability of agricultural production units, this study aimed at the development of scales to diagnose the qualitative and quantitative variables that compose the production systems, as well as to assign different degrees of sustainability to the scales. The methodology used was the descriptive approach, and the strategy and technical procedures were derived from the study of multiple cases. Information on characteristics of the agricultural production units were obtained in interviews with the farmers, following a previously elaborated form. In order to delimitate the research, the rural properties diagnosed were the ones belonging to Córrego Ajuricaba watershed, in Marechal Candido Rondon (Paraná, Brazil). The study resulted in the construction of a matrix sustained by five criteria, derived in thirty indicators parameterized in a scale of five degrees of sustainability: 1. Unsustainable (0-20), 2. Tending to Unsustainability (20,1-40), 3. Transition (40,1-60), 4. Tending to Sustainability (60,1-80), 5. Sustainable 80,1-100). Based on the tests carried out, it was concluded that the parameters established in the intervals of the scale of indicators are consistent, at regional level, to diagnose production units and watersheds. The methodology, appropriately adapted to different conditions, will facilitate the analysis and the decision-taking regarding the use of public policies in municipal districts and communities.
