TheaimofthestudywastodeterminetheanthelminticactivityofCassiaabbreviata,Schotiabrachypetala,Sennaitalica,PappeacapensisandPeltophorumafricanumagainsteggandthirdlarvalstagesofH.contortus.nbsp;ThebarkofC.abbreviata,P.capensisandP.africanum,therootbarkofS.italicaandtheleavesofS.brachypetalawereharvested,driedatroomtemperatureinthelaboratoryandthereafterextractedinhotandcolddistilledwater.Concentrationsof2.5,5.0and7.5mg/mLoftheseextractsweretestedforinhibitoryactivityagainstH.contortusegghatchingandlarvaldevelopment.nbsp;HotandcoldwaterextractsofP.africanuminhibitedthehighestpercentageofeggs(25and22%,respectively)fromhatchingatthelowestconcentrationof2.5mg/mL.Theseextractsdidalsoinhibit86and80%oflarvaldevelopment,respectively.ThehighestratesoflarvalmortalitywererecordedforP.africanumandS.italicahotwaterextracts(68%and65%nbsp;nbsp;withintwohoursatthelowestconcentrationand63%and64%forcoldwaterextracts.nbsp;Thepercentageoflarvalmortalityincreasedastheconcentrationsincreased.However,theexperimentalresultswerenotsolelydependentonextractconcentrationbecauseallthethirdstageH.contortuslarvaediedwithin72hoursirrespectiveofthelevelofconcentration.ThisworkthereforesupportstheuseofthefiveexperimentalplantspeciesusedinthepresentstudyforthecontrolofgastrointestinalnematodesbytheBapedipeopleoftheBloubergMunicipalityinLimpopoProvinceofSouthAfricaandrecommendthatfurtherstudiesliketoxicitytestingandinvivotrialsbemadetovalidatetheuseoftheseplantsasanalternativetoanthelminticdrugs.
