Cropresiduesconsistingoftheaerialpartofcowpea(Vignasinensis),groundnut(Arachishypogea)orleavesofbanana(Musasapientum)andcassava(ManihotesculentaCrantz)wereexaminedforwashinglosses(WL)ofdrymatterandinvitrogasproductioncharacteristicsbycomparingrumenfluidandfreshvoidedsowfaecesassourceofinoculum.Sampleswereusedinthefreshstateofaftersun-drying.Awashingtimeof90minappearedtobethemoreconvenienttimefordeterminingWLvalues.Onaverage,thesun-driedsampleshad62.8%higherWL(P0.001)thanthefreshsamples.Ahighlysignificantrelationship(R2=0.70;P0.001)wasfoundbetweeninvitrogasproductionover96hrfrommaterialsincubatedwithsowfaecesandthesameindexobtainedfromcowrumenfluidassourcesofinoculum.Thewashingeffecthadaminorinfluence(P0.05)ontheinvitropotentialgasproduction(a+b)whereasthesourceofinoculumhadnosignificanteffectontheinvitrorateconstantquot;cquot;ofgasproduction.Thetypeofcropresiduesignificantlyinfluenced(P0.001)boththevalueofpotentialgasproductionandtherateatwhichitisproduced.Itissuggestedthatinoculapreparedeitherfromcowrumenfluidorfreshlyvoidedsowfaecescanbeusedforarapidscreeningofthedegradationcharacteristicsofarelativelylargeamountofunknownsamples.
