Ninesun-driedleavesfromtropicaltreesandshrubswereexaminedforwashinglossesofDM(WL)andinvitrogasproductioncharacteristicsoftherumenecosystem.InvitrogasproductionwascomparedwithWL.Thegasvolumeproductioncouldbeexplainedbytheamountoftotalshortchainfattyacid(SCFA)producedover96hr(R2=0.88;P0.001).Thegas:SCFAproductionratiowas23.8ml/mmol.Potentialgasproductiona+basdescribedbytheexponentialmodelp=a+b(1+e-ct)wassignificantly(P0.05)correlatedwithWLofeitherunwashed(r=0.74)orwashedleaves(r=0.67)after96hrofincubation.Actualgasproductionat3,6,12,24,48and96hrcouldbepredictedfromWLofleaves(0.49R20.77;P0.05).Thehighestcorrelationbetweenbothparameterswasobtainedat6hr(R2=0.77;P0.001).Thissameinterdependencecouldnotbeestablishedwithwashedsamples.Itisconcludedthatthewashinglosstesthasgoodpotentialaspredictorofinvitrogasproductionintherumenecosystem.
