Impact of training on poultry farming and evaluation of improved Nicobari fowl under intensive and extensive management systems in Andaman, India

ThepresentstudywasundertakentoevaluatetheimpactoftrainingprogrammeonpoultryfarmingwithNicobarifowlandtostudythedifferenttraitsunderbackyardsystemwithsupplementalfeeding.ItisanendangeredandendemicpoultrygermplasmofAndamanandNicobarIslandandhighesteggproduceramongalltheindigenousbreedsofIndia.Somefarmersprovidesmalllowcosthousesfortheshelterofbirdsusinglocalmaterials.Somefarmersevendidnotprovideanyhouseandthebirdsusedtotakeshelterinthebushesortreesforshelteratnight.Usually,thebirdsafterlayinginthemorningusedtowalktolongdistanceinsearchoffeedandusedtocomebackonlyatdusk.TherearethreestrainsofNicobarifowl,namely,Brown,BlackandWhiteNicobarifowl.Thetotalestimatedpopulationofthisbreedisabout7524.nbsp;Thepercentadoptionoftrainingprogrammevariedwidely.Itwashighestin1997(76%).Thebodyweightat8weekageandweightatmaturityformalesdifferedsignificantly.Annualeggproductionunderbackyardwas151eggsandhenhouseeggproductionunderdeeplitterwas41.56%.Therewasnosignificantdifferenceofageatfirsteggandeggweightbetweendifferentmanagementsystems.Thehatchabilityundernaturalincubationwashigher.Themortalitypercentagealsowashigherinbackyardcondition.SotheimpactoftrainingonpoultryfarmingandrearingofimprovedNicobarifowlwasbeneficialunderbackyardcondition.
