Effect of fresh mulberry leaves and sweet potato vines on growth performance of pigs fed a basal diet of broken rice

Twelvecrossbredpigs(rangeof15to20kgweight)werefedabasaldietofbrokenrice(restrictedto2%ofLWasDM)supplementedwithfreshmulberryleaves,freshsweetpotatovinesoramixtureofthetwofoliages.Itappearedthataperiodofsomenbsp;30dayswasrequiredforadaptationtothediets.duringwhichtimetherewerenodifferencesamongtreatments.From30to90nbsp;daysandfortheoverallperiodof0-90days,intakeofDMandcrudeprotein,andliveweightgainwashighestforpigsfedthedietsupplementedonlywithsweetpotatovineswithlowestvaluesforpigsfedonlymulberryleavesasthesupplement.Therewasatendencyforfeedconversiontofollowasimilarpattern.nbsp;DMintakeandgrowthratewerepositivelycorrelated(R2=0.83).Itisconcludedthatthebenefitsofthesweetpotatovinesaretheirsuperiorpalatabilitycomparedwithmulberryleaves,whichresultedinhigherintakesofDMandcrudeproteinandbetterpigperformance.
