Threecrossbredcastratemalepigs,weighingonaverage24kgwereallottedatrandomtothreedietstostudytheeffectoffreshsweetpotatovineandfreshmulberryleaves,givenseparatelyormixedtogetheronintake,digestibilityandNretentionofgrowingpigswithabasaldietofbrokenrice.Theactualintakesofthefoliagesaccountedfor21to28%ofthetotalDMintake,.andabout55%ofthecrudeproteinintake.Therewasastrongindication(P=0.066)thatintakesoffoliageDMwerehigherwhenthesweetpotatovineswereallorpartofthefoliagesupplement.TotalintakesofDMandcrudeproteindidnotdifferamongthetreatments.CoefficientsofapparentdigestibilitywerehighforDMandorganicmatterwithnodifferencesamongthetreatments.TheapparentdigestibilitycoefficientsoftheDM,OMandcrudeproteinwerehigherforthemulberrydietcomparedwiththedietsinwhichtheproteinsupplementcontainedsweetpotatovines.Nretentionwashighonalldiets,equivalenttoaliveweightgainoftheorderof250-300g/day,withasuggestionofahighervalueforthedietwithmulberryleavesItisconcludedthattheproteininthefreshfoliageofmulberryleavesiswellutilizedbygrowingpigsfedabasaldietofbrokenrice.Therewerenoadvantagesfromgivingamixtureofsweetpotatovinesandmulberryleavescomparedwitheitherfoliagegivenalone.
