Arne Marin Klausen’s study of Dagbladet and his book Med Dagbladet til tabloid, en studie i dilemmaet b?rs og katedral (1986), is one of the most important contributions to media anthropology in Norway. By following the shift to tabloid format in one of the biggest editorial offices in Norway, Klausen shows how this has consequences for both the newspaper’s content and form, and for the organization. In this article, I show how Klausen’s study has relevance for research on newspapers and organizations today by connecting it to my own studies of newspaper organizations. Firstly, I look into the dilemma between the commercial and the ideological, which should not get mixed. Secondly, I discuss Klausen’s notion of the media-aesthetics’ governance; how the form of the tabloid format caused a shift in internal power relations in the editorial office. These two topics are actualized by the digital entry that have consequences for both journalistic practices and organization of newsrooms. I argue that even though the changes in itself might be different, one can see similar mechanisms and attitudes towards change today as in 1986, thirty years after the book was released.
