：Objective To investigate the effect of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)hot compress therapy with medicated salt on abdominal pain and distention in long-term bedridden elderly patients. Methods 〓Totally 240 elderly patients with abdominal pain and distention were selected and divided into the observation group and the control group, with 120 cases in each group. Patients in both two groups received abdominal massage with clockwise circular movements, and those in the control group were given TCM hot compress therapy with medicated salt. The improvement of abdominal discomfort, satisfactory degree and compliance with TCM technique were evaluated and compared between two groups. Results 〓The total effective rate of symptom relief in the treatment group was 90.8%, significantly higher than 75.8% in the control group(P0.05). The satisfactory degree and compliance with TCM technique in the observation group were higher than those in the control group respectively(P0.05). Conclusion 〓The hot compress therapy with medicated salt is an effective and safe TCM technique in treatment of abdominal pain and distention in long-term bedridden elderly patients.
