Abstract First‐order axillary buds from Actinidia arguta (Siebold et Zucc.) Planch, ex Miq. shoots were shown to develop second‐order axillary structures in the first growing season of their development. This is contrary to what has been reported earlier. More importantly, the now revised description of A. arguta bud development does not support the hypothesis that flower evocation in kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa (A. Chev.) C. F. Liang et A. R. Ferguson) occurs in the spring of the second‐growing season of bud development, immediately before flower differentiation.
