摘要

Chronic kidney disease of uncertain aetiology (CKDu) has reached epidemic proportions in the North Central Province (NCP) of Sri Lanka. Although CKDu cases have been reported from other parts of the country no systematic study has been conducted to evaluate the true burden of the disease outside the endemic area. This study was conducted to identify the prevalence of CKDu in a rural area of Mon- eragala District, which lies outside the CKDu endemic area where the inhabitants are involved in both paddy and sugarcane cultivation. The role of urinary p2 microglobulin as an early biomarker of the disease and the role of cadmium, arsenic and lead as risk factors in the development of the disease were assessed.
