Not very long ago, the Netherlands had a unique position worldwide in the field of ethnological museums. In the early 1980s there were ten ethnological museums. The three largest and most important were the National Museum of Ethnology in Leiden, the Museum of Ethnology in Rotterdam (owned by the city of Rotterdam), and the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam (owned by a society, financed by the national government).
