An Interview with William A. Barnett ?￠????

Bill Barnett has been highly in?uential in shaping academic research on monetary and ?nancial aggregation, using index number and aggregation theory. He is the inventor of the Divisia monetary aggregates and founder of the modern ?eld of aggregation-theoretic monetary aggregation. Over the years, he has argued that the of?cial simple-sum monetary aggregates, produced by the Federal Reserve and other central banks around the world, are inconsistent with neoclassical microeconomic and aggregation theory. The resulting internal inconsistency of the monetary aggregates with the neoclassical models within which the aggregates are used has become known as the “Barnett critique.”
