Economic Importance of the Nile Perch (Lates niloticus L.)

This review paper sheds the light on commercial yield, socio-economic aspects, and marketing of the Nile perch (Lates niloticus L.) in common African lakes and rivers such as the Nile River, Lake Nubia, Lake Victoria and Lake Kainji. The concept of fish commercialization has affected fishermen catching commercial fishes such as the Nile perch which generates high income compared to the other Nile fish. Therefore, fishermen in fisheries such as Jebel Awlia Dam fishery and Lake Victoria fishery have tended to use gillnets with specific mesh sizes for catching large Nile perch and other commercial Nile fish. Hence, the Nile perch industry has been flourished widely especially in countries sharing Lake Victoria. Because of intensive fishing toward the Nile perch, its numbers has been decreasing especially in fisheries of the White Nile perch. For this, the present review paper is intended to provide baseline information on the Nile perch as an important commercial Nile fish.
