A team of Agricultural Research Servicescientists has reported a biotechnologicalapproach that enables crop speciesto produce, or to increase production of, thephytochemical compound pterostilbene.Stilbenes are a subgroup of phytochemicalscalled “polyphenols.” The approachcould pave the way for ramping up levelsof potentially healthful pterostilbene incrops that normally produce it, such asgrapes and berries.
