Therdwratisanewstrainofdwarfmutantthathasdecreasedbloodthyroxine(Tsubxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"4/sub)andgrowthhormone(GH)concentrationsandtesticularenlargementduringdevelopmentandaging.Toconfirmwhetherthisstraincanbeusedasanewhypothyroidmodel,theexperimentsreportedherewerecarriedout,usingadultrdwrats,rdwratstreatedwiththyroxine,andclinicallynormal(N)Wistar-Imamichirats.Clinicalparametersofdeficientthyroidfunctioninrdwratswerechosenforevaluationandcharacterization.Bodyweight,hemoglobin(Hb)concentration,hematocrit(Hct),glucose(GLU),andsystolicbloodpressureweresignificantlylower,andserumvaluesforaspartatetransaminase(AST),totalcholesterol(TC),totalprotein(TP),andbloodureanitrogen(BUN)werehigherinrdwthaninNrats.SerumconcentrationsoftotalTsubxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"4/subandfreetriiodothyronine(FTsubxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"3/sub)weresignificantlylower,andserumthyroid-stimulationhormone(TSH)concentrationwasmarkedlyhigherinrdwthaninNrats.SerumGHconcentrationwassignificantlylowerinrdwthaninNrats.Resultsofhistologicexaminationindicatedthatthethyroidglandofrdwratswasmarkedlyatrophied,comparedwiththatofNrats.Resultsofclinicalexaminationoforgansandhematologicandbiochemicalvaluesinrdwratscorrespondedtothoseofthehypothyroidstateinhumans.Mostorganweights(heart,kidney,spleen,andadrenalgland),hematologicandbiochemicalvalues(Hb,HctTC,TP,BUN),bloodpressure,andserumhormone(TSHandGH)valuesunderwentsubstantialrestoration(partialorcomplete)towardnormalinresponsetoreplacementtherapy.Inconclusion,therdwratisausefulmodelofcongenitalhypothyroidism.
