Effect of Gonadectomy on the Androgen-Dependent Behavior of Ganglion Cell-Like Cells in Djungarian Hamsters (Phodopus sungorus)

Ganglioncell-like(GL)cellsresideinthedermisoftheventralskinofmaturemaleDjungarianhamsters(Phodopussugorus)andexpressandrogenreceptor(AR).ToassesswhetherGLcellshaveandrogen-dependentbehavior,weevaluatedthehistologicchangesofGLcellsaftergonadectomy.Fivemaleand5femalehamstersweregonadectomizedattheageof4wkandnecropsied14wklater.Thenumber,distribution,andproliferativeactivityofGLcellsinthethoracoabdominalanddorsalskinswereevaluatedhistologicallyandcomparedwiththoseofcorrespondingintactanimals.GLcellsweremorenumerous,weredistributedthroughouttheskinmorewidely,andhadhigherproliferativeactivityintheintactmalehamstersthanintheirgonadectomizedcounterparts.Similartrendsregardingthese3parameterswereseeninovariectomizedcomparedwithintactfemalehamstersandbetweenintactmaleandintactfemalehamsters.TheseresultssuggestthattheGLcellsofDjungarianhamstersdemonstratesex-associateddifferencesintheirdistributionandproliferativeactivityandthatandrogenmaybeinvolvedinthedevelopmentofthesecells.
