A DISCUSSION of existing subjject authority lists should logically begin with a definition of terms. First, what are subject headings for? Isabelle Anderson's description (her article, "Subject headings", in the Medical Library Association's Handbook of medical library practice, I94, P. I30-47) is simple and clear: "Subject headings do one or all of three things: they show where to find material on any specific subject; they show as nearly as possible in one place everything that is to be had on that subject; and through cross-references they indicate mention of the subject in places which would not be apparent immediately."
