The formation of Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) in April 2011 saw the former Defence Estates organisation brought together with other estate infrastructure functions in the MoD to form a single organisation. The new organisation aims to streamline the management processes and unite expert skills in order to provide the best facilities for the country's service personnel. However, this is no simple task; the land that falls within the MoD's remit is approximately 1% of the entire UK, and incorporates accommodation, training and technical facilities for thousands of people, as well as services for catering, cleaning, leisure and energy, to name just a few. Not only does DIO have to manage the estate infrastructure to ensure it supports the country's military operations, but it must also manage the estate as cost effectively as possible, while maintaining the estate's sustainability; the latter in particular being a hot-button topic in recent years.
