The connected home has long been the promise of a life made smarter and simpler by technology. From refrigerators that will automatically add milk to the shopping list when you get low, to smart thermostats that will set your home to the desired temperature even while you're not there, the goal of home automation is to make the systems and appliances in your home programmable, more cost-efficient and remotely controllable. Ten years ago, achieving this entailed expensive equipment and professional installation, which typically appealed only to high-income homeowners. The potential of the category was mostly limited to a small, affluent addressable market.
