An, Yanming, The Idea of Cheng (Sincerity/Reality) in The History of Chinese Philosophy

Within the framework of Western philosophy, it is almost impossible to perceive thensignificance of the concept of cheng 誠 as conceived in Chinese minds, and to feel itsnfundamental power driving Chinese thinking in history. This may be the reason that we donnot find much discussion about this concept in Western scholarship. However, I would saynthat, without an appreciation of cheng, Chinese philosophy will always be alien to anWestern mind, and any talk about Chinese philosophy in such a context may only be able tonstimulate a superficial interest in English readership.
