Opening Statement

The executive need not ask his or her CIO to describe the damage that poor data―data that are incorrect, out of date, poorly defined, simply unavailable, or otherwise unfit for use―can do. He or she need only read the newspaper. The accounts of misleading financial statements, challenged elections, misread medical prescriptions, terrorists that slipped through the cracks, and on and on are stories that capture our attention and won't let go.
