摘要

The editors of The multilingual city: vitality, conflict and change, Lid King and Lorna Carson, argue that there is a gap in urban research that overlooks the important relationship between societal multilingualism and the city. This publication aims to fill this research void by investigating the multilingual vitality of 18 cities spread across Europe, Canada, and Australia. This book follows other trends in urban multilingual research, such as Extra and Yagmur (2004) and the Multilingual Manchester project (Matras & Robertson, 2015). However, what is unique about this volume is its expansive look into a range of domains where linguistic diversity appears, whilst also comparing 18 diverse cities. In turn, this volume contributes to a better understanding of how communication occurs in multilingual cities and how multilingual citizen communities are managed.
