PARADIGM SHIFTS FOR TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY MANAGEMENT SCIENCE

To sum up, when comparing the subtlety, brilliance, and power of the business management philosophies of the IBMs, the GEs, the TIs, and the Batas of the world with the crude pragmatism and bottom-line empiricism of many industries one is forced to conclude that a major and profound gulf exists between these two states of management minds that management accountants can apply directly to the designs of their information systems. The gulf is between the future and the past, the profound and the meretricious, the truly powerful and the merely hard-minded, the civilized and the primitive. The work must continue not only on the development of new systems paradigms for management but on the implementation of the best we already have in the spirit that has carried through from Fayol to Bata and Beer in Europe to Barnard and Watson and Cordiner and their successors in North America.
