'Management of Science information in the twenty-first century'

Mr Erie de Grolier, a renowned French specialist in library and information science, made an excellent intervention under the title of 'The Age of Revolution' and the Librarian's New Tasks' on the occasion of UNESCO's Open House in 1989 when the 55th IFLA General Congress took place in Paris. This article takes stock of the world situation concerning press freedom and book production prior to the French Revolution and the tremendous changes that occurred during and after that period, not only in France but in other parts of the world, too. The author goes on to draw the main lines of another more recent revolution, i.e. the one that has taken place in communication with the introduction of new media, with ever increasing specialization and numbers of information users.
