It is a challenge for the industry as a whole to diversify cocoa supply and Cargill Cocoa & Chocolate is addressing this by developing cocoa industries in countries where cocoa has not traditionally been grown, such as Vietnam, where climate and soil conditions are good. Cargill first established a presence in Vietnam in 2004, with the initial phase of its initial cocoa project running from 2004-2006. This project, to train 400 farmers in good farming and post harvest practices, was financially supported by the Dutch government. As well as training, the project also consisted of a subsidised fertiliser programme, the setting up of more than 50 demonstration farms, and the establishment of two buying stations to provide farmers with access to the global market.
