The Brazilian confectionery industry dates back to the 19th century, with the installation of its first factories taking place in the 1900s. Brazil now produces about 1.2 million metric tons of confectionery annually, generating US$ 12 billion. In 2011 volumes were 6% higher than they had been during the previous year. A study by Euromonitor put Brazilian market growth at 3.6%, compared to a 2% global average.
