There were high levels of growth at most of the major Italian container ports in 2000. This year, increases have generally been more modest, but are still running well above those being achieved at most northern European ports. They are also easily sufficient to justify the considerable investment in additional facilities and handling hardware being made by Italian port authorities and terminal operators. Over the past few years, Genoa has strengthened its position as the main gateway for Italian container traffic. The port's throughput in 2000 was just over 1.5 million TEU, an increase of 21.6% compared with 1999, making it one of the fastest growing container ports in the whole of the Mediterranean.
