Canadian initiative targets shippers

Stepping up its drive to boost container volumes at Canada's west coast ports of Vancouver (BC) and Prince Rupert (BC), the Canadian Government is launching a project this year aimed at major shippers. As part of the recently launched Pacific Gateway project, the Canadian Government's Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) has created a special unit to target the biggest US importers, which include the retail giants Wal-Mart, Target, Kmart and Home Depot. The department plans to stage high level visits to the headquarters of these and other companies, to encourage them to route their transpacific imports via the above-mentioned gateways.
