While rail appears to have a bright future, it would be folly to suggest that this should be at the expense of highway improvements. Yet elements of the rail freight industry, the European Commission and European Parliament seem set on making road freight less flexible and more expensive. Shippers want to use rail but the majority feel unable to do so. European vehicle manufacturers, in particular, have voiced frustration over their problems to move more products by the more environmentally-friendly rail sector, claiming that this transport sector 'is stuck in the past.' The statement was put to shippers at a recent discussion platform organised by the European Shippers' Council in Paris.
