Appositional bone growth and de novo bone formation are two different phenomena by which bone can become juxtaposed to an implant surface (Davies 2003). There is abundant evidence that the processes of tissue differentiation and bone formation around implants are strongly influenced by the local mechanical loading history (Huja et al., 1999; Romanos et al. 2003). Nevertheless, there is still a lack of knowledge concerning the role of specific mechanical parameters on the tissue response around implants. The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of mechanical parameters on the phenomena of tissue differentiation, appositional bone growth and de novo bone formation around a cylindrical turned acid-etched titanium immediately loaded implant.
